DC Vote's 2004 Champions of Democracy Awards Reception
Celebrating Our Community - United for Equal Rights
On Wednesday, October 27, 2004 from 7:00 - 10:00 pm at the
Mandarin Oriental, Washington D.C., DC Vote honored its 2004 Champions of Democracy Awards recipients.
Each year, DC Vote recognizes Champions of Democracy for their dedication to fulfilling the promise of democracy for residents of Washington, DC. These men and women represent the very best of American excellence.
Champions of Democracy exercise their liberties to speak out about the injustice of living under a system where the governed do not have a vote in the election of those who govern. They understand that being disenfranchised affects all aspects of civic and community life.
DC Vote's 2004 Champions of Democracy are:
- Sweet Honey In The Rock
Grammy Award-winning female African American a cappella ensemble and longtime advocates of ending taxation without representation
- Jack Evans
DC City Councilmember (Ward 2)and dedicated supporter of DC voting rights
- Catherine L. Hughes
Founder and chairperson of Radio One, Inc., the largest African American owned and operated broadcast company in the nation. Having started her company in Washington, DC, Ms. Hughes has always shown dedication to minority communities, the entrepreneurial spirit, mentoring women, and being "the voice of the Black community."
DC Vote's 2004 Champions of Democracy Awards Reception
Nearly 400 supporters joined DC Vote to honor this year's Champions of Democracy. With fantastic entertainment from jazz harmonicist Frederic Yonnet and a stirring acceptance performance from 2004 Champions of Democracy Sweet Honey in the Rock, the celebration of DC's communities united for equal rights was a great success.
* Sweet Honey In The Rock has generously provided these two songs to DC Vote. Sweet Honey In The Rock uses these inspirational songs to educate fans across the country about DC's disenfrachisement. Sweet Honey In The Rock's voices are energizing and engaging while demanding equal civil rights for Distrct of Columbia residents who suffer taxation without representation every day.
