Tips When Writing Your Elected Officials

Here are some tips that you may find helpful when sending an e-mail or letter to your legislators.

  • Write to the legislators for whom you can vote

  • Address only one issue per letter

  • Ask for something specific (e.g. pass the bill or stop the filibuster)

  • Keep it short

  • Make it personal (e.g, I am a veteran who believes my fellow veterans living in DC should be allowed to vote)

  • Use your organization or institution's letterhead, if applicable

  • Be courteous

  • Include your return address and phone number on your letter

  • Follow up with a phone call to the legislator's office
