DC Voting Rights Act

In the House of Representatives for the 110th Congress, the DC Voting Rights Act, H.R. 1905, had also been introduced in earlier forms as H.R. 1433 and H.R. 328. It was known as H.R. 5388 in the 109th Congress. In the Senate, the DC Voting Rights Act is known as S. 1257.

DC Voting Rights Act - Sample Letter for Organizations

Dear Senator:

I urge you to pass the DC House Voting Rights Act (S. 1257). Please cosponsor and work to enact this important legislation that would give Washingtonians a voting member in the House of Representatives for the first time ever.

DC citizens pay full federal taxes and have fought and died in every war, but they are denied representation in Congress.

Without affecting the make up of the Senate, the bill that would address this injustice is vote-neutral and nonpartisan. The DC Voting Rights Act pairs a seat for traditionally Democratic Washington, DC with an additional seat for Republican-leaning Utah.

The DC House Voting Rights Act, reintroduced in the 110th Congress by Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and Representative Tom Davis (R-VA), maintains momentum and strong support from two bipartisan mark-ups in House committees this year and a Floor vote on April 19.

In addition to support on Capitol Hill, Americans across the country believe the time has come to bring democracy to the nation's capital. According to a recent national poll conducted by KRC Research, 82 percent of Americans believe that DC residents deserve full voting representation in Congress.

Prominent constitutional scholars and former administration officials agree that Congress has the authority to pass this important civil rights legislation.

I urge you to help provide Americans living in Washington, DC with representation in Congress by cosponsoring and working to enact the DC House Voting Rights Act (S. 1257).

Sincerely,
