Adopt a Leader
Adopt a Leader is DC Vote's pioneer program to engage, inform and activate leaders who can help bring American democracy to America's capital. The program facilitates a unique, ongoing relationship where Adopt a Leader members communicate the need for full congressional voting representation to elected officials and opinion leaders.
This program stands out among other advocacy campaigns because DC Vote encourages team members to take ownership of the program and develop a strategy among the team. DC Vote advises, guides and monitors the Adopt a Leader teams, while allowing team members and captains the freedom to create their own success.
Here are some examples of the sort of action we would expect you to take as part of Adopt a Leader:
-
Call your Leader's office and find out the name of the staff person who works on voting rights issues. Find out if there is someone who specifically works on the DC House Voting Rights Act.
- Document correspondence and progress by posting to your Team Bulletin Board. Share common questions and responses.
-
Recruit constituents to send letters and e-mails to your Leader.
- Arrange a meeting with your Leader on Capitol Hill and invite your team. If you cannot meet with the Leader, arrange a meeting with the staffer you have been contacting plus a senior-level aide, such as the chief of staff.
- Send letters-to-the-editor and call in to radio talk shows in your Leader's state.
-
Post records of all blogs, letters, radio talk show stints to your Team Bulletin Board.
