Mr. Joe Sternlieb - DC Vote 2005 Champions of Democracy Award Recipient

Deputy Director, Downtown DC Business Improvement District Corporation

Joe Sternlieb has been the deputy director of the Downtown DC Business Improvement District Corporation since 1997 where he has overseen economic development, transportation, physical improvements and homeless programs. Between 1993 and 1996 he was the Staff Director of the D.C. Council's Committee on Economic Development where he managed legislative work related to the creation of the Washington Convention Center Authority, the MCI Center, Industrial Revenue Bond Forward Commitments, and Business Improvement Districts.

Mr. Sternlieb is a co-founder and former board member of DC Vote, and serves on the boards of the DC Central Kitchen, Comcast DC, and the Downtown Services Center. In the past he has served as an alternate member of the National Capital Planning Commission; the DC Committee to Promote Washington; the Washington Convention Center Advisory Committee; and the Mayor's Interactive Downtown Task Force. In the early 1990's he was an elected member of ANC 2C.

Prior to getting involved in local DC issues, Mr. Sternlieb was the national grassroots coordinator at the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the national issues organizer at People For the American Way, and spent seven years working on nuclear arms control issues in New York and Washington. He holds a Bachelors degree from Connecticut College and a Masters degree in city planning from M.I.T. He and his wife, Linda Singer, live in Washington DC with their two children and are active public school parents.
