As leader of the Republican majority in the House, Speaker Boehner has repeatedly refused to recognize DC's right to voting representation and local government, while
claiming to restore the House of Representatives to the "people's house."
Here are the ways, in just two short months, Speaker Boehner and his majority in the House have hypocritically trampled on the rights of taxpaying
Americans living in the nation's captial:
- Congress revoked the DC Delegate vote in the Committee of the Whole on the very first day of the new Congress.
- The House budget proposal would prohibit DC from using local funds for syringe access programs to prevent the spread of DC's HIV/AIDS epidemic, by far the worst in the nation.
- Impose a ban on local funding to help low-income women obtain safe reproductive health services in DC.
- House members have introduced a bill to abolish DC's local gun safety laws and allow easier access to assault weapons. The bill would also forbid DC leaders from legislating on gun control in the future.
- They have publicly threatened to repeal DC's marriage equality law.
Whatever position you take on these issues, what is indisputable is that they should
be decided by DC's local elected leaders, just as in other local jurisdictions across the country. Speaker Boehner says
he wants to get big government out of Americans' lives, but his actions are speaking much louder, and all DC hears is hypocrisy.
